The Directorate General for Energy and Transport has a staff of over 1 000 in ten Directorates located in Brussels and Luxembourg. In addition to the development of Community transport and energy policies, including dealing with State aid, the DirectorateGeneral is responsible for managing the financial support programmes for the trans European networks, technological development and innovation.

The main role of the European Commission's Environment Directorate-General (DG) is to initiate and define new environmental legislation and to ensure that agreed measures are put into practice in the EU Member States. The Environment DG is based in Brussels and has around 650 staff.
